Boston MA –The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation today announced that Ben Wolman, a freshman at Palisades Charter High School in Pacific Palisades, California has won the national John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest for High School Students. Wolman’s prize-winning essay describes the political courage of former Colorado State Senate President John Morse, who in March 2013 risked his career to lead the passage of new gun safety measures. Wolman will be honored during the May 4, 2014 Profile in Courage Award ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. He will also receive a $10,000 award for his first-place essay.

Nearly fifty years have passed since the publication of John F. Kennedy’s Profiles in Courage, the Pulitzer Prize-winning homage to American political greatness. In 1989, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation created the Profile in Courage Award to honor President Kennedy’s commitment and contribution to public service. The annual award, named after Profiles in Courage, recognizes elected officials who have withstood strong opposition from constituents, powerful interest groups or adversaries to follow what they believe is the right course of action.

Kennedy New Frontier Awards to Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Kica Matos, Executive Director of JUNTA for Progressive Action, the oldest Latino community service organization in New Haven, Connecticut, at a public ceremony at the John F. BOSTON – Caroline Kennedy, President of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, and Tom Putnam, Director of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, today officiated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion and opening of the new 30,000 square foot wing of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The ceremony took place in the addition’s new classroom and was attended by a group of fourth and fifth grade students from the Winship School, a Boston Public School in Brighton. Earlier in the day, the students participated in a program on the history of the Civil Rights Movement, which was the first of the Kennedy Library educational offerings to be held in the new classroom. Dr. Carol R. Johnson, Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools, was also present for the announcement.
Ambassador Caroline Kennedy, Honorary President of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, traveled to Seoul and Tokyo to present the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award® to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for working to improve relations between their countries despite domestic opposition stemming from historical issues. Both leaders accepted the award by video at a ceremony in Boston on October 29, 2023, and received the Profile in Courage Award lantern from Ambassador Kennedy in person in Seoul on March 27 and Tokyo on March 29.

Kennedy: His Life and Legacy, a new book written specifically for middle school aged children on the life of President John F. Kennedy, at a book reading for 150 school children at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum for a five-day institute, The Civil Rights Struggle Through the Kennedy Years, to enhance their understanding of this crucial time in the nation’s past so they may better teach students about it in the classroom. Made possible by a Teaching American History grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the program will run June 26, 27, and 30 and July 1 and 2, 2003.
